An ijsvlakte, or ice sheet, is a vast expanse of glacial ice covering an area greater than 50,000 square kilometers (19,000 square miles). These massive bodies of ice form over land, accumulating snow over thousands of years that compacts into ice. Today, the Earth has two major ice sheets: the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet. Smaller ice masses that do not meet the size criteria are generally referred to as ice caps.

Ice sheets are dynamic features that play a significant role in global climate and sea level. Their immense weight can depress the underlying landmass, a phenomenon known as isostatic depression. Meltwater from ice sheets contributes to ocean currents and influences global temperatures. As ice sheets melt, they release vast amounts of freshwater into the oceans, leading to sea level rise, which poses a considerable threat to coastal communities worldwide.

The formation and behavior of ice sheets are subjects of intense scientific study.
