Ijazah is a certificate or license in Islamic education that signifies authorization from a qualified teacher to transmit a specific text, discipline, or body of knowledge. The word literally means permission or authorization, and in traditional usage it conveys more than just proficiency: it denotes the right to teach and to grant further ijazah in turn.
