An icesample is a specimen of frozen water collected for scientific analysis. In cryospheric and climate research, icesamples include ice cores taken from glaciers, ice sheets, or sea ice, as well as surface ice and firn. These samples preserve records of past environmental conditions because water molecules and trapped gases form layers over time.

Collection and preservation: Ice cores are obtained with drills inserted into the ice. Core segments are labeled with depth, site, and date, and transported in insulated containers or with dry ice to prevent melting. In the laboratory, samples are kept at subfreezing temperatures and handled in clean environments to minimize contamination. Documentation and chain-of-custody are maintained to ensure data integrity.

Analysis: Physical properties such as density, porosity, crystal structure, and grain size are measured. Chemical analyses determine major ions, trace elements, and stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen (for example, delta-18O and delta-D) as proxies for past temperatures. The atmosphere trapped in air bubbles within the ice provides measurements of greenhouse gases such as CO2, CH4, and N2O. Dating is achieved by layer counting, and, where necessary, radiometric or luminescence dating assists with absolute ages.

Applications: Icesamples yield long-term climate and atmospheric reconstructions, help interpret volcanic eruptions and dust deposition, and calibrate climate models. Data are shared in international repositories and used in assessments by bodies such as the IPCC.

Challenges: Contamination, diffusion, and post-collection isotopic alteration can affect results. Adherence to strict sampling, storage, and analytical protocols is essential.
