Høyttaleres, often translated as loudspeakers or speakers, are electroacoustic transducers that convert electrical energy into sound energy. This allows them to reproduce audio signals, making them an essential component in virtually all audio playback systems. The fundamental principle of operation involves a diaphragm that vibrates when an electrical audio signal is passed through an attached voice coil. This coil is typically suspended in a magnetic field, and the interaction between the coil's magnetic field and the permanent magnet causes the coil and the attached diaphragm to move back and forth. These movements create pressure waves in the surrounding air, which are perceived by the human ear as sound.

The design and construction of loudspeakers vary widely depending on their intended application and the frequency range they are designed to reproduce. Common types include dynamic loudspeakers, which are the most prevalent, utilizing the electromagnetic principle described above. Other types include electrostatic speakers, which use electrostatic forces to move a thin membrane, and ribbon speakers, where a thin, conductive ribbon acts as both the diaphragm and the voice coil.
