Höyrynsulkukerros, often translated as vapor barrier or vapor retarder, is a critical component in building construction, particularly in cold climates. Its primary function is to prevent moisture vapor from migrating through the building envelope, which can lead to condensation within wall or roof assemblies. This condensation can cause significant damage, including mold growth, rot, and reduced insulation effectiveness.

The höyrynsulkukerros is typically installed on the warm side of the insulation. In most residential construction in Finland, this means it is placed on the interior side of the wall or ceiling framing, just before the interior finish materials like drywall are applied. The choice of material depends on the climate, building design, and the materials used in the rest of the assembly. Incorrect placement or poor sealing can create more problems than it solves, trapping moisture instead of preventing it.
