A högtrycksnatriumlampa, commonly known as a high-pressure sodium lamp (HPS), is a type of electric discharge lamp that produces light by passing an electric arc through a mixture of sodium vapor and mercury. These lamps are characterized by their distinct orange-yellow light and are widely used for general lighting applications where high efficiency and long lifespan are important.

The lamp consists of a translucent ceramic arc tube, typically made of alumina, which contains the sodium, mercury, and xenon gas. When electricity is applied, an arc is struck, exciting the mercury and producing ultraviolet light. This UV radiation then excites the sodium vapor, causing it to emit its characteristic yellow light. The high pressure within the arc tube contributes to a more continuous spectrum compared to low-pressure sodium lamps, resulting in better color rendering.

HPS lamps are known for their energy efficiency, converting a significant portion of electrical energy into visible light. They also have a long operational life, often exceeding 20,000 hours. Due to their bright, efficient, and somewhat warm light, they are frequently employed in street lighting, industrial areas, security lighting, and for illuminating greenhouses.
