Höftvärk refers to pain located in or around the hip joint. This discomfort can manifest in various ways, from a dull ache to sharp, stabbing sensations, and may radiate into the thigh, groin, or buttock. The onset of hip pain can be sudden due to injury or gradual, developing over time.

Several factors can contribute to hip pain. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is a common cause, where the cartilage cushioning the hip joint wears down. Other inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the hip. Injuries such as fractures, dislocations, or labral tears are frequent culprits, often resulting from falls or direct trauma. Tendinitis, inflammation of the tendons surrounding the hip, and bursitis, inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joint, are also prevalent. Less common causes include infections, nerve compression, and certain types of cancer.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, assessing range of motion and identifying tender areas. Imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be used to visualize the bone and soft tissues for abnormalities. Blood tests can help identify inflammatory conditions.

Treatment for hip pain depends on the underlying cause. Conservative measures often include rest, pain relievers (like NSAIDs), physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles and improve flexibility, and corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation. In cases of severe damage or persistent pain unresponsive to conservative treatment, surgical intervention, such as hip replacement surgery, may be necessary.
