Hånddesinfektionen, commonly referred to as hand sanitizer, is a liquid, gel, or foam product used to kill microorganisms on the hands. It is an alternative to washing hands with soap and water when these facilities are not readily available. The primary active ingredient in most hand sanitizers is alcohol, typically ethanol or isopropanol, at a concentration of at least 60%. This alcohol works by denaturing proteins essential for the survival of many bacteria and viruses.

The effectiveness of hand sanitizers against various pathogens is well-documented. They are particularly useful in reducing the transmission of common respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. However, they are not as effective against all types of germs, such as norovirus, and do not remove dirt or other visible grime from the hands. For heavily soiled hands or after contact with certain chemicals, washing with soap and water remains the preferred method.

Proper use of hand sanitizer involves applying a sufficient amount to cover all surfaces of the hands and rubbing them together until dry. This typically takes about 20 seconds. Frequent use can sometimes lead to dry skin, and products often contain emollients to counteract this effect.
