While often a nuisance due to their itchy bites, some species of hyttyss can also act as vectors for diseases like malaria, West Nile virus, and Zika virus, though the prevalence of these diseases varies significantly by geographic location and specific mosquito species. In Finland and many other northern regions, hyttyss are particularly abundant during warmer months, often leading to periods of significant insect activity. Control measures typically focus on eliminating breeding sites and using repellents.
