Hypoteesitesteihin, also known as hypothesis testing, is a statistical method used to make decisions or draw conclusions about a population based on sample data. The core idea is to evaluate two competing statements about a population parameter. These statements are called the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis. The null hypothesis, denoted as H0, typically represents the status quo or a statement of no effect or no difference. The alternative hypothesis, denoted as H1 or Ha, is what the researcher is trying to find evidence for, suggesting there is an effect, a difference, or a relationship.

The process begins with formulating these hypotheses. Then, a sample is drawn from the population, and a test statistic is calculated from this sample. This test statistic measures how far the sample result deviates from what would be expected if the null hypothesis were true. The next step involves determining the probability of observing a test statistic as extreme as, or more extreme than, the one calculated, assuming the null hypothesis is true. This probability is known as the p-value.

A significance level, often denoted by alpha (α), is set beforehand. This alpha value represents the threshold for rejecting the null hypothesis. Common values for alpha are 0.05 or 0.01. If the p-value is less than the chosen significance level (p < α), the null hypothesis is rejected in favor of the alternative hypothesis. This suggests that the observed sample data provides statistically significant evidence against the null hypothesis. If the p-value is greater than or equal to the significance level (p ≥ α), the null hypothesis is not rejected, meaning there is not enough evidence to support the alternative hypothesis. It is important to note that failing to reject the null hypothesis does not prove it is true, but rather that the data does not provide sufficient evidence to disprove it.
