Hypohidration refers to a state of reduced body water content, less severe than dehydration. It occurs when fluid intake is insufficient to compensate for ongoing fluid losses, even if these losses are not extreme. Unlike dehydration, which implies a deficit of water that impairs physiological function, hypohidration may not always result in noticeable symptoms or performance decrements, especially in its milder forms.

The body maintains a delicate fluid balance through a complex system involving the kidneys, hormones, and thirst sensation. When this balance is disrupted, even slightly, hypohidration can result. Factors contributing to hypohidration include inadequate fluid consumption during daily activities, minor increases in sweat loss due to environmental conditions or light exercise, or certain medical conditions that affect fluid regulation.

While severe hypohidration can progress to dehydration, milder states might be characterized by subtle physiological changes. These could include a slight increase in heart rate, a minor elevation in core body temperature, or a reduction in plasma volume. The body has adaptive mechanisms to cope with short-term hypohidration, but prolonged or significant reduction in water content can eventually lead to impaired thermoregulation, reduced cardiovascular function, and diminished cognitive and physical performance.
