Hyperthymestic is a term used to describe individuals who possess highly superior autobiographical memory, also known as highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM). People with HSAM can recall an unusually vast quantity of personal life events, typically from the age of about 10 years onwards, with remarkable accuracy. They can recall specific dates, times, and details of past events, often with vivid sensory recollections.

This ability is not related to general intelligence or mnemonic techniques. Instead, it appears to be an innate trait, though the exact neurological basis is still being researched. Studies on individuals with HSAM have revealed some structural and functional differences in their brains, particularly in areas associated with memory and self-referential processing. For example, the caudate nucleus and the amygdala have shown increased volume and connectivity in some HSAM individuals.

While the ability to remember one's life in such detail might seem advantageous, it is not without its challenges. Individuals with HSAM report that negative or traumatic memories are recalled with the same vividness as positive ones, which can be distressing. The constant influx of detailed memories can also be overwhelming at times, and some individuals describe a difficulty in distinguishing between remembering and reliving past experiences. The phenomenon of hyperthymesia is relatively rare, and research is ongoing to better understand its prevalence, underlying mechanisms, and the lived experiences of those who possess it.
