Hyperbilirubinemia is a medical condition characterized by elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. When the liver is unable to process bilirubin efficiently or when there is an excessive production of bilirubin, it can accumulate in the bloodstream, leading to a condition known as hyperbilirubinemia.

The most visible sign of hyperbilirubinemia is jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Jaundice can range in severity from mild to severe. In newborns, a common form called physiological jaundice is often benign and resolves on its own within a few weeks. However, in some cases, particularly in infants, or in adults, hyperbilirubinemia can indicate underlying medical issues.

Causes of hyperbilirubinemia vary and can include liver diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, problems with the gallbladder or bile ducts, certain medications, and genetic disorders affecting bilirubin metabolism. In newborns, prematurity and certain blood type incompatibilities can also lead to elevated bilirubin levels.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure bilirubin levels. Further investigations may be conducted to identify the underlying cause, which can include imaging studies or liver function tests. Treatment strategies depend on the cause and severity of the hyperbilirubinemia. For newborns, phototherapy, where the baby is exposed to special lights, is a common treatment. In adults, addressing the underlying condition is the primary focus of treatment.
