Hydrothermal vents are fissures on the seafloor that release geothermally heated water. These vents are typically found along volcanically active mid-ocean ridges and plate boundaries. The water emerging from hydrothermal vents is rich in dissolved minerals and gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, methane, and iron. As this superheated water mixes with the cold, surrounding seawater, it precipitates out minerals, forming distinctive chimney-like structures known as smokers. Black smokers release dark, sulfide-rich water, while white smokers emit lighter-colored, sulfate-rich plumes.

The extreme conditions around hydrothermal vents, including high temperatures, pressures, and toxic chemical concentrations, were once thought to preclude life. However, these environments are teeming with unique ecosystems. Chemosynthetic bacteria, which derive energy from chemical reactions involving hydrogen sulfide or methane, form the base of the food web. These bacteria support a diverse array of organisms, including tube worms, mussels, shrimp, and crabs. These vent communities represent some of the most extreme examples of life on Earth and are of significant scientific interest for understanding the origins of life and the limits of biological adaptation.
