Hydroksyyliin is the Finnish term for a hydroxyl functional group, represented chemically as –OH. It is one of the most common and chemically reactive groups found in organic compounds. The hydroxyl group consists of an oxygen atom covalently bonded to a hydrogen atom and usually attached to a carbon atom. When the group is bonded to carbon in an alkanol (alcohol) the oxygen also donates a lone pair of electrons to form a coordinate bond, allowing the molecule to act as both an electron donor and an electron acceptor in chemical reactions.
