Hyaenodonts were an extinct order of placental mammals that were dominant terrestrial carnivores for much of the Cenozoic Era. They first appeared in the early Paleocene epoch, about 60 million years ago, and survived for over 40 million years, becoming extinct in the late Miocene, around 8 million years ago. Despite their name, hyaenodonts were not closely related to hyenas, which are canids. Instead, they belonged to a distinct lineage.

These mammals were characterized by their powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and strong bodies. Their dentition typically featured enlarged, blade-like premolars and molars adapted for shearing flesh and crushing bone. The size of hyaenodonts varied greatly, from small, weasel-like creatures to enormous apex predators that rivaled modern lions and tigers in size.

Hyaenodonts inhabited diverse environments across all continents except Australia and Antarctica. They filled various ecological niches, acting as predators and scavengers. Their evolutionary success demonstrates their adaptability and the importance of mammalian carnivores in prehistoric ecosystems. The eventual decline and extinction of hyaenodonts is thought to be linked to increased competition from the rise of other carnivoran groups, such as canids and feliforms, which eventually outcompeted them for resources.
