While not strictly defined by a rigid structure, humoreskas often feature a lively tempo, a cheerful melody, and playful rhythms. They can incorporate elements of folk music, dance tunes, or even parodies of more serious musical styles.

The form gained particular popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with composers like Antonín Dvořák and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky contributing notable examples to the repertoire. Dvořák's Seven Humoresques, Op. 101, is perhaps the most famous set, with the eighth piece in particular achieving widespread recognition.
