Hulladéktelepek, often referred to as landfills, are sites designated for the disposal of waste materials. They play a crucial role in managing the vast quantities of refuse generated by human activities. The primary function of a hulladéktelep is to contain waste in a way that minimizes its impact on the environment and public health. Modern landfills are engineered facilities designed with specific features to prevent pollution. These often include impermeable liners made of clay or synthetic materials at the bottom to prevent leachate, a toxic liquid produced when waste decomposes and mixes with water, from contaminating groundwater.

Waste is typically deposited in layers within the landfill. After each layer of waste is spread, it is compacted to reduce its volume. The compacted waste is then covered with a layer of soil or other inert material at the end of each day. This daily cover helps to control odors, prevent windblown litter, and discourage pests. Over time, as the landfill fills up, multiple layers are created.

Once a landfill reaches its capacity, it is capped with a final cover system. This cover is designed to be impermeable and prevent water infiltration, further containing the waste and its byproducts. The decomposition of organic waste within a landfill produces landfill gas, primarily methane and carbon dioxide. In many modern facilities, this gas is collected and can be used as a source of renewable energy, either for electricity generation or as fuel.
