Huangdi, also known as the Yellow Emperor, is a legendary Chinese sovereign traditionally regarded as the ancestor of the Chinese nation and a central figure in the foundational myths of Chinese civilization. His personal name is Xuanyuan, and he is commonly counted among the Five Emperors, a group of early rulers in Chinese tradition.

There is no consensus on whether Huangdi was a historical person. Traditional chronicles place his reign in the third millennium BCE, but modern scholarship tends to view him as a mythic or symbolic figure whose narrative conveys cultural memory rather than verifiable facts.

In myth and later literature, Huangdi is credited with uniting rival tribes in the Yellow River basin and with establishing important political and cultural institutions. He is said to have defeated the Yan Emperor (Yandi) at the Battle of Zhuolu, bringing order to the region and transmitting agricultural, technological, and administrative knowledge. The Yellow Emperor is also associated with the origins of Chinese medicine through the Huangdi Neijing, a foundational text whose attribution to him reflects longstanding symbolic authority, even if the work was compiled over time.

Huangdi's influence extends into religion, art, and national identity. Temples and shrines honoring him appear in various Chinese communities, and the Yellow Emperor is widely used as a symbol of Chinese civilization, unity, and cultural continuity. In modern times, he is portrayed as a cultural hero representing the long historical memory and heritage of the Chinese nation.
