Hreyfibörkurinn, also known as the motor cortex, is a region of the cerebral cortex that is responsible for the planning, control, and execution of voluntary movements. It is located in the frontal lobe of the brain, specifically in the posterior portion of the precentral gyrus.

The motor cortex is organized somatotopically, meaning that different parts of the motor cortex correspond to different parts of the body. For example, the area responsible for controlling the leg is located in one part of the motor cortex, while the area responsible for controlling the hand is located in another. This organization is often represented visually in a "motor homunculus," a distorted map of the human body that illustrates the relative amount of cortical area devoted to controlling different body parts. Areas that require fine motor control, such as the hands and face, are represented by larger areas of the motor cortex.

There are two main divisions within the motor cortex: the primary motor cortex (M1) and the premotor cortex (including the supplementary motor area). The primary motor cortex is directly involved in executing movements, sending signals down to the spinal cord to activate muscles. The premotor cortex and supplementary motor area are involved in planning and sequencing complex movements, as well as coordinating movements with sensory information.

Damage to the motor cortex can result in various motor impairments, such as paralysis, weakness, difficulty with coordination, and problems with fine motor skills, depending on the specific area and extent of the damage. These impairments are often studied in the context of neurological conditions like stroke or traumatic brain injury.
