The endocrine system, or hormonsystemet in Swedish, is a network of glands that produce and secrete hormones. These hormones are chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to target cells and organs, regulating a wide range of bodily functions. Key functions controlled by the endocrine system include metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, and mood.

The endocrine system works in close conjunction with the nervous system to maintain homeostasis, the body's stable internal environment. While the nervous system uses rapid electrical signals, the endocrine system relies on slower, but more sustained, hormonal signals.

Major endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, often called the "master gland" because it controls many other endocrine glands, the thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism, the adrenal glands, which produce hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, the pancreas, which produces insulin and glucagon to control blood sugar, and the gonads (ovaries and testes), which produce sex hormones.

Hormonal imbalances can lead to various health conditions. For example, insufficient insulin production causes diabetes, while an overactive thyroid can lead to hyperthyroidism. Understanding the endocrine system is crucial for comprehending many physiological processes and medical conditions.
