Hormoninvasopressiini, more commonly known as vasopressin or antidiuretic hormone (ADH), is a peptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. Its primary role is to regulate the body's water balance. Vasopressin acts on the kidneys, specifically on the collecting ducts and distal tubules, increasing their permeability to water. This allows more water to be reabsorbed from the filtrate back into the bloodstream, thereby concentrating the urine and reducing water loss from the body.

The secretion of vasopressin is primarily controlled by the osmolarity of the blood, detected by osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus. When blood osmolarity increases (meaning the blood is more concentrated), vasopressin release is stimulated, leading to water retention. Conversely, when blood osmolarity decreases, vasopressin release is inhibited, resulting in the excretion of more dilute urine. Other factors, such as blood volume and blood pressure, can also influence vasopressin secretion. For instance, a significant drop in blood volume or pressure can also trigger vasopressin release to help maintain blood pressure.

Beyond its role in water homeostasis, vasopressin also plays a role in vasoconstriction, which is why it is also called vasopressin. It can constrict blood vessels, leading to an increase in blood pressure. This effect is particularly important in situations of severe blood loss or hypotension. Vasopressin has also been implicated in social behaviors, learning, and memory in various animal models, though its precise roles in these areas in humans are still being actively researched. Disruptions in vasopressin regulation can lead to conditions like diabetes insipidus, characterized by excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of dilute urine.
