Hoofdvaart is a Dutch term used in waterway planning and management to denote the main waterway or principal route within a network of canals and rivers. It refers to the primary corridor intended for regular, long-distance, and often heavier inland shipping, in contrast with secondary routes such as zijvaart (side routes or feeder canals).

In the Netherlands, the Hoofdvaart forms the backbone of the inland navigation system and is part of the national system of waterways. It is typically designed to accommodate higher traffic volumes and larger vessels, featuring greater depth, wider locks, and more robust maintenance to meet the demands of commercial freight.
