Homotopiaryhmissä refers to the concept of homotopy groups in Finnish. Homotopy theory is a branch of algebraic topology that studies topological spaces by associating algebraic objects, called homotopy groups, to them. These groups capture information about the "holes" or connectivity of a space in a way that is invariant under continuous deformation.

The first homotopy group, often denoted as $\pi_1(X, x_0)$, is the fundamental group of a space $X$ with a base point $x_0$. It consists of homotopy classes of loops based at $x_0$. Higher homotopy groups, denoted as $\pi_n(X, x_0)$ for $n > 1$, are formed by considering homotopy classes of maps from the $n$-sphere $S^n$ to the space $X$, again with a distinguished base point.

A crucial property of homotopy groups is their homotopy invariance. This means that if two topological spaces are homotopy equivalent, their corresponding homotopy groups are isomorphic. This invariance allows mathematicians to classify and understand spaces by transforming them into simpler, equivalent forms and then studying their algebraic invariants.

The calculation of homotopy groups can be very challenging, even for relatively simple spaces. However, they provide powerful tools for distinguishing between spaces that might appear similar topologically. For example, the sphere $S^2$ and the torus $T^2$ are not homotopy equivalent, and their different homotopy groups clearly demonstrate this fact. Homotopy groups play a significant role in various areas of mathematics, including differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and theoretical physics.
