Holometaboly, also known as complete metamorphosis, is a type of insect development characterized by four distinct life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. This form of development is a significant evolutionary innovation that allows insects to exploit different ecological niches and food sources at different life stages.

The egg stage is the initial phase, where the embryo develops within the protective shell. Upon hatching, the insect enters the larval stage. Larvae are typically worm-like and are primarily focused on feeding and growth. They often look very different from the adult insect and may have chewing mouthparts, unlike the sucking or lapping mouthparts of many adults. As the larva grows, it undergoes several molts, shedding its exoskeleton to accommodate its increasing size.

Following the larval stage is the pupal stage. During this quiescent period, the larva undergoes a profound transformation. Its body tissues are broken down and reorganized to form the structures of the adult insect. This is often a non-feeding stage, and the pupa may be enclosed in a protective casing such as a chrysalis or cocoon.

Finally, the adult insect emerges from the pupal casing. The adult is reproductively mature and typically possesses wings, allowing for dispersal and reproduction. The adult stage is primarily focused on mating and laying eggs, thus completing the life cycle. Holometabolous insects, such as butterflies, beetles, flies, and bees, represent the vast majority of insect species and have been highly successful due to the adaptive advantages provided by this complete developmental process.
