Hjálpartæki, commonly known as "jumpers" or "jumper cables," are a set of heavy-duty electrical cables used to provide battery power from one vehicle to another. They are primarily used to start an engine when the battery is discharged, often referred to as a "jump start." The term *hjálpartæki* is Icelandic for "assistance cables," reflecting their purpose in providing temporary electrical assistance.

These cables consist of two sets of clamps connected by insulated wires. One set is typically red, representing the positive (+) terminal, while the other is black or black-and-white, representing the negative (−) terminal. The cables are designed to carry high currents, usually rated between 200 and 400 amperes, to deliver enough power to crank an engine.

To use hjálpartæki, the cables must be connected in the correct order: first, the positive clamp of the assisting vehicle to its battery’s positive terminal, then the other positive clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal, followed by the negative clamp of the assisting vehicle to its own battery’s negative terminal, and finally the last negative clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle (such as the engine block) to ensure a stable ground connection. This sequence prevents sparks near the dead battery, reducing the risk of explosion.

Hjálpartæki are essential tools for roadside assistance, particularly in cold climates where batteries are more likely to fail due to reduced efficiency. They are commonly found in vehicle emergency kits and are a standard feature in many cars. Proper care, including storing them in a dry place and avoiding kinks or sharp bends, ensures their longevity and reliability.
