Hitsauspuikko, or welding electrode, is a consumable rod used in arc welding processes. It serves as both a source of filler metal to join the base materials and as a conductor of electricity to establish and maintain the welding arc. The composition of the welding electrode is crucial as it dictates the mechanical properties and integrity of the weld. Electrodes vary widely in material, diameter, and coating, each designed for specific welding applications and metal types.

Common types of welding electrodes include those made of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, and bronze. The coating on an electrode, known as flux, plays several vital roles. It helps stabilize the welding arc, shields the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination (like oxygen and nitrogen) which can weaken the weld, and can also introduce alloying elements to enhance the weld's properties. The flux coating burns away during welding, producing shielding gases and slag, which floats on the surface of the molten metal and is later chipped away.

The selection of the correct welding electrode depends on factors such as the type of metal being welded, the thickness of the material, the welding position (flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead), and the desired strength and characteristics of the final weld. Proper handling and storage of welding electrodes are also important to prevent moisture absorption, which can negatively impact weld quality.
