The goal is to distinguish between the text's original message and later interpretations or additions.

This method was significantly developed during the Enlightenment and has been applied across various fields, including biblical studies, classical philology, and literary criticism. Key aspects include source criticism, which identifies and analyzes the potential sources used by the author; form criticism, which examines the genre and literary forms of the text; and redaction criticism, which investigates how an editor or redactor shaped the material. By understanding the historical circumstances in which a text was produced and transmitted, scholars aim to gain a more objective and historically accurate interpretation.
