Histopatologia, often shortened to histopathology, is the microscopic examination of biological tissues to study the manifestations of disease. It is a fundamental branch of pathology, the broader medical discipline concerned with the study of disease. Histopathology plays a crucial role in diagnosing a wide range of conditions, particularly cancer, by allowing pathologists to observe cellular abnormalities and tissue architecture that are indicative of illness.

The process typically begins with a biopsy or surgical resection, where a tissue sample is obtained from a patient. This sample is then fixed in a preservative, most commonly formalin, to maintain its structure. Following fixation, the tissue undergoes a series of processing steps, including dehydration and embedding in paraffin wax, which hardens it and makes it easier to slice thinly. These thin slices, known as sections, are then mounted onto glass slides. To visualize the cellular and structural details, the sections are stained with various dyes. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) are the most common stains, with hematoxylin staining cell nuclei blue and eosin staining cytoplasm and extracellular matrix pink. Additional special stains can be employed to highlight specific cellular components or microorganisms.

A trained histopathologist then examines the stained slides under a microscope, looking for characteristic changes such as cellular atypia, inflammation, necrosis, or the presence of abnormal cells or growths. The findings from the histopathological examination are crucial for determining the nature of a disease, its stage and grade (especially in cancer), and guiding treatment decisions. Histopathology is therefore indispensable in modern medicine for accurate diagnosis and patient management.
