Hip pain, or hipmsmärta in Swedish, refers to discomfort or aching felt in the hip joint or surrounding areas. This pain can originate from various structures within or around the hip, including the bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.

Common causes of hip pain include osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease where the cartilage wears away, leading to friction between bones. Another frequent cause is bursitis, inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint. Tendinitis, the inflammation of tendons, such as the hip flexor or gluteal tendons, can also cause pain, often due to overuse or repetitive motions.

Fractures of the hip bone, particularly common in older adults with osteoporosis, are a serious cause of hip pain and immobility. Muscle strains, often from physical activity, can also result in localized hip pain. Less common but significant causes include conditions like avascular necrosis, where blood supply to the hip bone is interrupted, or labral tears, damage to the cartilage rim of the hip socket.

The location and character of hip pain can vary. It may be felt as a dull ache, sharp pain, or a burning sensation. Pain can be localized to the groin, outer hip, buttock, or even radiate down the leg. The pain may worsen with movement, weight-bearing, or at night. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, and potentially imaging tests like X-rays or MRI to identify the underlying cause. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and can range from rest, physical therapy, and pain medication to more invasive procedures like injections or surgery.
