hiplife
Hiplife is a music genre from Ghana that blends highlife with hip hop. The term, a combination of “highlife” and “hip hop,” is widely associated with Reggie Rockstone, who popularized the style in the 1990s. Hiplife emerged in Accra as Ghanaian artists fused the melodic highlife guitar and brass with rapped verses, drum-machine beats, and contemporary production. Songs are often performed in a mix of Twi, Ga, Ewe and English, reflecting local languages and urban life. The genre quickly gained mainstream appeal through radio, clubs, and music videos, and became a platform for social commentary as well as party music.
