Hiperplázia refers to the enlargement of an organ or tissue caused by an increase in the number of its constituent cells. This is a controlled and regulated growth process, distinct from hypertrophy, which is an increase in cell size. Hiperplázia occurs in response to a specific stimulus, and when the stimulus is removed, the tissue typically returns to its normal size.

It is a common response to physiological or pathological stimuli. Physiological hiperplázia is observed in certain normal processes, such as the growth of the uterine lining during the menstrual cycle or the increased number of cells in the mammary glands during pregnancy and lactation. Pathological hiperplázia, on the other hand, is a response to abnormal conditions. Examples include benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), where the prostate gland enlarges due to hormonal changes, or skin warts, caused by viral infections that stimulate epidermal cell proliferation.

While hiperplázia itself is generally a benign condition, it is important to note that persistent or excessive hiperplázia can sometimes be a precursor to dysplasia or even cancer, particularly in certain organs like the endometrium. Therefore, medical evaluation is often necessary to determine the cause and significance of hiperplázia. Diagnosis typically involves medical history, physical examination, and may include imaging studies or biopsies to examine the cellular structure. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause of the excessive cell proliferation.
