Hingamiselülid, also known as respiratory centers, are a network of neurons located in the brainstem that control the process of breathing. This crucial system ensures that the body receives adequate oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide. The primary components of the hingamiselülid are found in the medulla oblongata and the pons.

Within the medulla oblongata, two main groups of neurons are responsible for generating the basic rhythm of respiration. The dorsal respiratory group primarily stimulates the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles, leading to inhalation. The ventral respiratory group is involved in more forceful breathing, activating accessory muscles during both inhalation and exhalation.

The pons contains the pneumotaxic and apneustic centers, which modulate the activity of the medullary centers. The pneumotaxic center can inhibit the inspiratory activity, helping to control the rate and depth of breathing. The apneustic center, on the other hand, can prolong inspiration.

These centers receive sensory input from various sources, including chemoreceptors that monitor blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and stretch receptors in the lungs that prevent over-inflation. This complex interplay allows for automatic and involuntary control of breathing, which can also be consciously overridden to a certain extent. Any disruption to these hingamiselülid can lead to serious respiratory problems.
