High uranium density refers to materials and fuel formulations that contain a high concentration of uranium per unit volume. In nuclear engineering, achieving a high uranium density in the fuel helps increase the usable fissile material per core volume, enabling higher volumetric power and/or smaller reactor cores. This concept is distinct from enrichment level, though enrichment and density can be used together to optimize reactor performance and fuel burnup.

Common approaches to high uranium density include using uranium-containing compounds and metals with intrinsically high uranium concentration. Uranium nitride (UN), uranium carbide (UC), and certain uranium silicides (for example, U3Si2) are favored for their higher uranium loading relative to traditional uranium oxide fuels. Metallic uranium also offers high density, but its use in reactors is limited by chemical reactivity, swelling, and corrosion concerns under irradiation. The choice of phase influences not only density but also thermal conductivity, irradiation behavior, and compatibility with cladding and coolant.

Applications of high uranium density fuels appear mainly in research reactors, fast reactors, and some space or specialty reactors where compact cores are advantageous. Higher density fuels can reduce core volume, improve neutron economy, and support higher power densities. However, they impose engineering challenges, including material swelling, fission gas release, licensing, and safety considerations related to radiological hazards and criticality control.
