Highsociety, often written as high society, refers to the social stratum composed of individuals and families with substantial wealth, prestige, and cultural or political influence. The term is used to describe the upper echelons of a given society, where membership is associated with indicators such as inherited or acquired wealth, education, social networks, and access to exclusive institutions or events. Distance from the middle and lower classes is typically measured through economic capital, social capital, and access to influential circles.

Historically, high society has been linked to aristocracy, landed elites, and other influential groups. In Europe, its foundations trace to hereditary titles, landownership, and courtly practices, later transforming as economies industrialized and capitalbased wealth grew. In other regions, elites gained prominence through business, politics, or religious power. Social life often centers on private clubs, philanthropy, elite education, and ceremonial events such as galas, balls, and salon gatherings, as well as media visibility.

In contemporary usage, high society encompasses cultural capital—education, taste, and familiarity with high-status norms—as well as financial clout. The concept can imply exclusivity and social separation, but it is also associated with philanthropy, patronage of the arts, and leadership in civic or cultural institutions. Perceptions of high society vary across cultures and over time, reflecting changes in wealth distribution, globalization, and norms around mobility and inclusivity.

Critics contend that high society reinforces inequality and restricts opportunity, while defenders argue that elite networks can mobilize resources for public goods. In many places, boundaries between high society and broader society are increasingly permeable through education, media, and transnational networks.
