Highmortality is a term used in demography and public health to describe a situation in which a population experiences elevated death rates over a defined period. The term is not a medical diagnosis but a description of mortality burden, and it is studied to understand health disparities and the effectiveness of health systems.

Mortality can be quantified in several ways: the crude mortality rate (deaths per 1,000 people per year); the age-standardized mortality rate to compare populations with different age structures; infant mortality rate; and cause-specific mortality rate. Life expectancy and the standardized mortality ratio are also common summaries of mortality burden. Distinctions are made between all-cause mortality and disease- or condition-specific mortality, and between mortality risk in the general population and case fatality rates among those with a disease.

A range of factors contribute to high mortality, including infectious diseases, chronic non-communicable diseases, malnutrition, limited access to timely and effective healthcare, poor sanitation, conflict and displacement, environmental hazards, and demographic factors such as aging populations. Socioeconomic status, education, and governance also influence mortality by shaping exposure to risks and access to resources.

Public health responses to high mortality emphasize surveillance, vaccination, control of infectious diseases, improvements in maternal and child health, nutrition, clean water and sanitation, trauma and emergency care, and broader health system strengthening. Interpretation of mortality data requires consideration of reporting accuracy, population structure, and migration.
