Hierophant is a title with roots in ancient Greek religion and later usage in Western esotericism. The word comes from the Greek hierophantēs, combining hieros meaning holy and phainein meaning to reveal or show. In classical contexts, the hierophant was the chief priest responsible for revealing sacred rites and mysteries to initiates.

In the Eleusinian Mysteries, the hierophant presided over initiation ceremonies conducted at Eleusis and within the Telesterion. The role involved disclosing the sacred objects and symbols associated with the rites—the hierophanies—to initiates. The position was highly prestigious and drawn from senior priestly ranks within the cults of Demeter and Persephone. Distinguishing vestments or ritual regalia signified the hierophant’s authority to reveal the holy things, though exact details varied over time and source.

From late antiquity onward, the term was adopted by various esoteric and fraternal orders in Europe. In these contexts the hierophant is typically a senior teacher or leader who transmits tradition and occult knowledge to initiates. The concept also appears in popular culture through the Hierophant card in many tarot decks, where it generally symbolizes spiritual authority, tradition, and adherence to established structures. In some occult traditions, the hierophant denotes the head of a rite or grade within a given order.
