Hiekkakivistä is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of sand-sized mineral particles or rock fragments. The most common mineral in sandstone is quartz, due to its abundance and durability. Feldspar is another common component. The grains are typically held together by a matrix of finer material, such as silt or clay, and cemented by precipitates like silica, calcium carbonate, or iron oxides.

The formation of sandstone occurs when sand and other granular minerals are deposited in layers by wind, water, or ice. Over time, these sediments are buried by more layers, leading to compaction. Dissolved minerals in groundwater then percolate through the pore spaces between the sand grains, precipitating and binding the grains together to form solid rock. This process is known as lithification.

Yellow and tan colors can be due to various iron compounds or the color of the sand grains themselves. White or light-colored sandstones are typically composed of quartz grains with little to no iron or other coloring minerals.

The texture of sandstone, which refers to the size, shape, and arrangement of its grains, can vary significantly. This texture influences the rock's porosity and permeability, affecting its ability to hold and transmit fluids. Porous sandstones are important reservoirs for groundwater, oil, and natural gas.

Sandstone is a versatile building material, used for constructing buildings, bridges, and monuments throughout history. Its durability and aesthetic appeal have made it a popular choice in architecture. It is also used in landscaping, as aggregate in concrete, and as a source of silica for glassmaking.
