Hidrogénhajtás refers to a propulsion system that utilizes hydrogen as its fuel. This can manifest in several ways, with the most common being hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen combustion engines operate similarly to conventional internal combustion engines, but they burn hydrogen gas instead of gasoline or diesel. The primary byproduct of hydrogen combustion is water vapor, making it a potentially cleaner alternative.

Hydrogen fuel cells offer a different approach. They electrochemically convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, producing only water and heat as byproducts. This electricity can then be used to power electric motors, making hydrogen fuel cells a key technology in the development of zero-emission vehicles. The advantage of fuel cells lies in their higher efficiency compared to combustion engines and their quiet operation.

The storage of hydrogen is a significant challenge for hidrogénhajtás systems. Hydrogen has a low volumetric energy density, meaning a large volume is needed to store a significant amount of energy. This necessitates either high-pressure tanks or cryogenic storage, both of which add complexity and cost.
