Hidrofílicas refers to substances or molecules that have an affinity for water. The term "hydrophilic" originates from the Greek words "hydro" meaning water and "philos" meaning loving. These substances are typically polar or charged, allowing them to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. Common examples of hydrophilic substances include salts like sodium chloride, sugars such as glucose, and many types of alcohols.

In biological systems, hydrophilic molecules play crucial roles. For instance, the outer surface of cell membranes is largely composed of hydrophilic heads of phospholipids, which interact with the aqueous environment both inside and outside the cell. Proteins also exhibit hydrophilic properties, with their surface amino acids often exposed to water, facilitating their solubility in aqueous solutions. This characteristic is essential for many biological processes, including enzyme activity, nutrient transport, and cellular signaling.

The behavior of hydrophilic substances in mixtures with water is predictable. They tend to dissolve readily in water, forming homogeneous solutions. This solubility is a direct consequence of the favorable interactions between the hydrophilic solute and the water solvent, overcoming the cohesive forces between water molecules and the cohesive forces between the solute molecules. Conversely, substances that do not readily mix with water are termed hydrophobic, meaning they repel water.
