Hidastussäiliöt, known in English as damping tanks or surge tanks, are hydraulic devices used to control pressure fluctuations in a fluid system. They are typically employed in situations where rapid changes in flow or pressure can occur, such as in hydroelectric power plants, pumping stations, and water distribution networks.

The primary function of a hidastussäiliö is to absorb sudden surges or pulsations in fluid pressure, thereby protecting pipelines, pumps, and other equipment from damage. This is achieved by providing a volume of air or an elastic medium that can compress or expand in response to pressure variations. When pressure increases rapidly, the fluid enters the tank and compresses the air cushion, thus reducing the peak pressure. Conversely, when pressure drops suddenly, the compressed air expands, pushing fluid back into the system and preventing cavitation or negative pressures.
