Henkilötietolainsäädäntö, often translated as personal data legislation, refers to the body of laws and regulations governing the collection, processing, storage, and transfer of personal data. The primary goal of this legislation is to protect the privacy rights of individuals and ensure that their personal information is handled responsibly by organizations. In Finland, the overarching legislation is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is directly applicable within all member states of the European Union, and the Finnish Data Protection Act, which complements and specifies certain aspects of the GDPR.

Key principles enshrined in this legislation include lawfulness, fairness, and transparency in data processing, purpose limitation, data minimization, accuracy, storage limitation, and integrity and confidentiality. Individuals have several rights, such as the right to access their data, the right to rectification, the right to erasure (the "right to be forgotten"), the right to restrict processing, the right to data portability, and the right to object to processing. Organizations processing personal data must have a legal basis for doing so, such as consent, contractual necessity, or legitimate interest. They are also required to implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to ensure the security of the data. Data protection officers may be appointed in certain cases to oversee compliance. Breaches of personal data legislation can lead to significant fines and other penalties.
