Hemodialysis is a medical treatment that filters and purifies the blood using a machine. It is a life-sustaining procedure for people whose kidneys have failed to adequately perform these functions. Healthy kidneys remove waste products, excess fluid, and electrolytes from the blood, and regulate blood pressure. When the kidneys can no longer do this, waste products and fluid build up in the body, leading to serious health problems.

During hemodialysis, a patient's blood is pumped through a dialyzer, also known as an artificial kidney. The dialyzer contains a semipermeable membrane that separates the blood from a dialysis fluid. Waste products and excess fluid pass from the blood across the membrane into the dialysis fluid, while essential substances like red blood cells and proteins remain in the blood. The purified blood is then returned to the body.

Access to the bloodstream is necessary for hemodialysis. This is typically achieved through a surgical procedure that creates an arteriovenous (AV) fistula or graft, or by inserting a temporary catheter. Hemodialysis sessions usually take place several times a week, with each session lasting several hours. The frequency and duration of treatment are determined by the patient's individual needs and medical condition. While hemodialysis can effectively manage kidney failure, it is a demanding treatment that requires significant lifestyle adjustments.
