Hemiaseetaliryhmä, or hemiacetal group, is an organic functional group formed from the reaction of an aldehyde or ketone with an alcohol. It contains a carbon atom bonded to one alkoxy group (-OR), one hydroxyl group (-OH), and two other carbon atoms. In the case of an aldehyde, the hemiacetal carbon is also bonded to a hydrogen atom. If derived from a ketone, the hemiacetal carbon is bonded to two other carbon atoms.

The formation of a hemiacetal is a reversible reaction. In the presence of an acid catalyst, an alcohol attacks the carbonyl carbon of an aldehyde or ketone, leading to the formation of the hemiacetal. Conversely, under acidic conditions, hemiacetals can revert back to their original carbonyl compound and alcohol. The equilibrium of this reaction often favors the reactants, especially in dilute solutions.

Hemiacetals are important intermediates in the formation of acetals, which are formed by the reaction of a hemiacetal with another molecule of alcohol. This further reaction replaces the hydroxyl group of the hemiacetal with another alkoxy group, yielding an acetal. Acetals are generally more stable than hemiacetals and are often used as protecting groups for carbonyl functionalities in organic synthesis.

A significant example of hemiacetal formation occurs in carbohydrates. Sugars, such as glucose and fructose, exist in cyclic forms where an intramolecular reaction between a carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group on the same sugar molecule results in the formation of a cyclic hemiacetal. These cyclic hemiacetals are crucial for the structure and reactivity of monosaccharides.
