It contains a carbon atom bonded to one alkoxy group (-OR), one hydroxyl group (-OH), and two other carbon atoms. In the case of an aldehyde, the hemiacetal carbon is also bonded to a hydrogen atom. If derived from a ketone, the hemiacetal carbon is bonded to two other carbon atoms.
