Hematology studies the components of blood, its formation, function, and regulation. Blood consists of formed elements—red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets—and plasma. Hematopoiesis produces these cells primarily in the bone marrow, with developmentally important contributions from the spleen and liver.

Clinical hematology covers diseases such as anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, leukemias, lymphomas, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative neoplasms, and disorders of immunity. It also encompasses disorders of hemostasis and thrombosis, as well as transfusion-related complications.

Diagnosis relies on laboratory tests including the complete blood count, blood smears, reticulocyte counts, coagulation panels, and flow cytometry, complemented by bone marrow examination and molecular studies. Treatments include transfusion support, medications, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and, in some cases, stem cell transplantation. Supportive care and management of complications are integral parts of therapy.

Subfields include transfusion medicine, hematopathology, pediatric hematology, and hemostaseology. Ongoing research explores gene therapy, regenerative approaches, and improved diagnostics. The term hematologice is less commonly used today but may appear in historical texts or as a regional spelling.
