Helyértékek, often translated as place value, is a fundamental concept in mathematics. It refers to the value that a digit represents in a number based on its position. In any positional numeral system, such as the decimal system (base-10) we commonly use, each digit's position within the number determines its worth.

For example, in the number 345, the digit 5 is in the ones place, representing 5 units. The digit 4 is in the tens place, representing 40 units. The digit 3 is in the hundreds place, representing 300 units. Therefore, the number 345 is the sum of these individual place values: 300 + 40 + 5.

The concept of place value is crucial for understanding arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It allows us to systematically manipulate numbers and perform calculations accurately. Without place value, representing and working with large numbers would be significantly more complex.

Different numeral systems have different place value systems. The decimal system uses powers of 10.
