Helisündmused, often translated as sound events, is a term used in phonetics and linguistics to describe the distinct, perceptible units of sound that constitute spoken language. These are not the same as individual phonemes, which are abstract categories of sound, but rather the concrete acoustic realizations of those phonemes in a given utterance. A helisündmus can be a single sound, a part of a sound, or even a series of sounds that are perceived as a single unit by a listener.
