Helikahjustus, also known as noise-induced hearing loss, is a gradual and often permanent hearing impairment caused by exposure to loud sounds. This type of hearing loss occurs when the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, responsible for transmitting sound vibrations to the brain, are damaged or destroyed by excessive noise. Unlike other forms of hearing loss, helikahjustus is typically irreversible because these hair cells cannot regenerate.

The primary cause of helikahjustus is prolonged exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels. Everyday activities such as listening to loud music through headphones, attending concerts, working in noisy environments like construction sites or factories, and even using loud machinery can contribute. Symptoms of helikahjustus can develop slowly and may initially go unnoticed. They often include difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy settings, ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus), and a feeling of fullness in the ears. In some cases, individuals may also experience hyperacusis, an increased sensitivity to everyday sounds.

Prevention is crucial for avoiding helikahjustus. This involves reducing exposure to loud noises, using hearing protection such as earplugs or earmuffs in noisy environments, and lowering the volume of personal listening devices. Regular hearing checks can help detect early signs of damage. While helikahjustus cannot be cured, early detection and protective measures can prevent further loss and manage existing symptoms.
