Heimsmarkmiðum, or the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are a set of 17 interconnected goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. These goals are designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all." They address a wide range of global challenges, including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water, affordable energy, economic growth, innovation, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace and justice, and partnerships.

The SDGs are intended to be universal, applying to all countries, both developed and developing. They are built on the principle of "leave no one behind," emphasizing the need to reach the most vulnerable populations first. Each goal has specific targets that are meant to be achieved by 2030. Progress on the SDGs is monitored through a series of indicators. The SDGs represent a global consensus on the key priorities for sustainable development and serve as a framework for international cooperation and national policymaking. They encourage collaboration between governments, the private sector, civil society, and individuals to work towards a shared vision of a more equitable and sustainable world.
