Hegyképződés refers to the geological processes responsible for the formation of mountains. This complex phenomenon is primarily driven by the movement of tectonic plates, the large, rigid slabs that make up Earth's lithosphere. When these plates collide, immense pressure builds up, causing the Earth's crust to buckle, fold, and uplift.

There are several types of mountain-building events. Orogenic processes, which involve significant deformation of the Earth's crust, are the most common. These can occur at convergent plate boundaries where plates move towards each other. Subduction zones, where one plate slides beneath another, often lead to the formation of volcanic mountain ranges as magma rises to the surface. Continental collision, where two continental plates meet, results in widespread folding and faulting, creating vast mountain belts like the Himalayas.

Another mechanism is block faulting, which occurs when large blocks of the Earth's crust are uplifted or downthrown along faults. This can create horst and graben structures, with the horsts forming the mountain ranges. Uplifted plateaus can also be eroded over time, leaving behind isolated, elevated areas that resemble mountains. Volcanic activity, even without plate collisions, can also build mountains as lava and ash accumulate. The specific type and appearance of a mountain range are determined by the geological processes involved, the rock types present, and the subsequent erosion and weathering they undergo.
